What is a Blood Iron Test?
Blood iron test is a blood test which can be conducted from the convenience of your own home. When collecting the blood sample it’s important to avoid squeezing the finger to get the blood to flow. This can cause haemolysis of the sample and make it useless for testing. Please follow the instructions on the leaflet provided carefully and remember the following tips:
- Do not squeeze the finger when collecting the blood sample. A good firm prick from the lancet is needed, and then take your time.
- Warm the hand before sample collection, this can help a great deal.
- Use the little finger and gently milk the hand rather than squeezing the finger.
- Stand up when collecting the blood sample, as this can really assist blood flow.
The test measures levels of ferritin in your blood. Ferritin the main iron storage protein in the blood and levels of ferritin are used to indirectly measure levels of iron.
Why should I have a Blood Iron Test?
Low levels of iron are indicative of iron deficiency which causes anaemia. High levels of iron can be indicative of a number of diseases.
Low levels of iron in the blood can be associated with hair loss and so it’s important that to check your level to rule this out as a cause if you have hair loss.
Test results
The results of the test will be sent to the “Test Results” area of your Pharmacy2U Online Doctor account. You will be notified by email when the results are there, and the doctor will also be notified of the results.
The result will tell you the level of ferritin in your blood, and it will indicate the normal levels and indicate if your result falls within the normal range.
If they do find low levels of iron the doctor will get in touch with you to recommend the appropriate course of action.
