Microsoft are updating terminology used across in Office 365 admin center, Exchange admin center, and Azure admin portal to provide you with a more consistent experience when interacting with groups and distribution lists. Microsoft have begun gradually rolling this change out to Targeted Release organizations, and they anticipate that the rollout will be completed worldwide by the end of June 2018.
With this change, administrator’s will see updated terminology across the Office 365 admin center, Exchange admin center, and Azure admin portal. The ‘Type’ column will now be referred to as ‘Group Type’. This column will now include values of ‘Office 365’, ‘Mail-enabled security’, ‘Distribution list’, and ‘Security’. The concept of ‘Distribution Group’ will now be referred to as ‘Distribution List’ throughout experiences such as group creation, edit, and upgrade.
If your organization has a dependency on the previous values being present in the ‘Type’ column within the user experience, you will need to update your dependencies to use the new terminology.
